With site preparation nearly complete, construction of Hut 8’s data centre is well underway.

“We are following through on our promise to shareholders to deliver site construction and electrification on time and within budget,” said Andrew Kiguel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hut 8.

Since the project was announced in mid-March, two BlackBox Data Centres, 10 transformers, and three switch boxes have already been installed.

The remaining data centres will be installed on a weekly basis with staged server installation also starting in May.

Sixteen of the company’s data centres are scheduled for installation before the end of June, while the company expects to be fully operational and construction completed by the third quarter of 2018.

Hut 8 made headlines in mid-March when it announced an agreement with the City of Medicine Hat to supply 42 megawatts of electricity and lease 11 acres of land from the City of Medicine Hat for 10 years.

“As a utility owner, City of Medicine Hat provides a sustainable, competitive advantage with low cost and reliable service that is attractive to our customers,” said Mayor Ted Clugston.

“We’re committed to growing and diversifying our economy and welcome Hut 8 as a new customer and business in our community.

All told, Hut 8 is investing approximately $100 million into the Medicine Hat cryptocurrency mining facility.

Once fully operational, the company expects to employ 42 people. So far, the company has filled 20 of the 42 jobs. Job seekers are encourage to visit Indeed.ca for up-to-date job postings.
