To keep up with growing demand, Reliance Insurance is expanding their downtown footprint.
“We want to be where the action is,” says Justin Cunningham, owner and operations manager at Reliance Insurance. “Most of the banks and insurance companies are located downtown, and that’s where our business gets a lot of exposure.”
Reliance was founded in 1992 and established down the block on 4th Street SE. One of Medicine Hat’s only locally owned insurance companies, the brokerage continues to specialize in home, auto and commercial insurance.
In 2006, Reliance moved into their current location on 6th Avenue SE, where they have taken the opportunity to develop the neighbouring lot instead of moving the business. When completed, the office will double in square footage from 3,700 square feet to 7,400 square feet.
Due to a growing clientele base, Reliance has been adding to their team of brokers. Including administration staff, brokers and partners, the business employs 19 people. With room to grow into, they may be adding a couple of more staff in 2018.
The growth of Medicine Hat’s professional services sector is widespread. In summer 2017, 20/20 Vision built a 3,300 square foot office for their new practices, 20/20 Urgent Eyecare and 20/20 Kids, which opened November 1. Swell Private Wealth and Little Owl Learning Centre have also moved into newly built and renovated buildings, breathing new life into a once-dormant block.
Expanding professional services support other types of investment, most notably food and beverage. The Cellar, a restaurant, and Travois Ale House, a nano-brewery, are scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2018.
In the meantime, Reliance insurance anticipates completing their expansion this summer.
