With a population of more than 60,000 and a trading area of 140,000, Medicine Hat is a thriving prairie community with some of the lowest property taxes and utility rates in Canada. It is also one of the sunniest cities in Canada and is located on the South Saskatchewan River Valley in Southeastern Alberta.
Major petrochemical facilities in the city, include Methanex, CF Industries, Cancarb, and Goodyear. In 2018, Cancarb announced it would spend $40 million to expand its thermal carbon black production capacity. Aurora Cannabis is currently constructing a 1.6 million square foot cannabis production facility in city limits, which is expected to employ approximately 450 once operational. Folium Biosciences, a Colorado-based CBD extraction company, has committed to building a 100,000 square foot facility in the city as well, employing an additional 250.
Major public employers include Medicine Hat’s three school divisions, the Government of Alberta, the City of Medicine Hat, and Alberta Health Services.
